Scripture Union Daily Guide 16th August 2025 Outline
Again, the Pharisees were testing Jesus with a question. Again, an answer which silenced them. “Love” perhaps the most abused word in modern English! When people have sex, even with a prostitute, they say they “make love”! Some people say categorically: “You do not need any religion. All you need is love.” Indeed, Jesus Christ says that to love is the greatest commandment, to love God and to love our fellowmen; and the Pharisees agreed with Him. Easier said than done! He says to love God with ALL our heart, soul and mind. Can we, and do we?
Jesus Christ had a question of His own. His purpose was to show them how they underestimated Him, the Messiah, in their understanding of Scripture (even though they do not recognise Him as such.) Thank God we have this advantage. Not only do we know Him as our Messiah, we also know Him as Love come down. More still, He plants God’s love in our hearts so that we become able to love God with heart, mind and soul, and to love our neighbour as ourselves.
